As you can see, I switched the order of events here. Instead of Styx looking around for Garanos' belongings, then noticing the townsfolk coming his way, it was the fact that the villagers were coming that caused Styx to hustle up and get Garanos away from harm. It didn't hugely affect the story in any way, but sometimes one action and another work more fluidly in a different order than you first think.
