In the very first written draft, Styx stopped here to rest for a moment before entering the tunnel for the long trek, and as he held Garanos, contemplated the Harbinger's taunts of "You think your love could save her?" I didn't draw it here partially because I didn't want to drag the scene out any further, and partially because I was feeling lazy, and it could've easily added two or three pages of drawing to the sequence.
When I got to this part in Volume I, I decided to make this tunnel entrance the same one that Styx and his mother found so many years previous. It provided a chance for more development for Styx, which the Originals really lack, and draws a parallel between Styx's Mother saving her son, and Styx later saving Garanos, using the same tunnel.
