Alright forgive me here, but what just happened? Did Gharsena cut one of Garanos’ “legs” off? Or did she just get stabbed? It’s a well-drawn visual, I just can’t quite tell.
Hmmm… Might be either, though it looks very much like a stabbing motion from Ochs guard to yours truely. (German Longsword’s in my list of interests, by the way, though I have no official training.) My guess is that she stabbed down at Gharsena’s torso, but Gharsena tried to block the blade or just plain got her leg in the way by mistake.
In other news, this is not looking too good for our heroes, unless the shadows in the background are the ship’s crew.
My post was responding to Galya, if it wasn’t entirely clear. (Cake got in the way.) And in response to Cake, I say it looks more like she hit her with a bucket of paint. :D
To those having trouble following the action: Ghar tries to block a sword with one of her ‘legs’, which doesn’t work so well and results in a pretty deep cut (judging from the blood splatter). They inconclusively spar with their spikes. Ghar throws some energy around. Garanos blocks some of it with her blade, but one shot catches her pretty solidly. We’ll probably get to see how bad the damage is next update, but the spray of blood doesn’t bode well.
I think the artist has intentionally chosen to leave out transition panels. Normally in a comic fight scene, you have a progression – in one panel, you’ll see the attack launched. In the next panel, you see the results of the attack (hit, missed, dodged, parried, whatever). Here, some of the attacks *and* their results on the same panel, with the transition denoted by motion blur. It’s an interesting style choice. While it does make the action a little harder to follow, it does a nice job of emphasizing the speed at which the fight is taking place.
I also think it’s interesting to see the difference between the two fighters. Garanos appears to be superior up-close, as befits her training and combat experience. Gharsena has the advantage at range with her energy-bolt things (seriously, we need to come up with a decent name for those).
Ewww. Now I’m having mental images of all the horrible flesh-necrotizing stuff I saw in a medical textbook. Which fits pretty neatly with what we’ve seen Gharsena do so far… So yes, “plague bombs” works!
if you look at the first panel, it looks like gharsena used her upper left leg to block garanos’ upward sweeping strike, at least that’s how i visualized it.
I could see it like that, but in the previous panel (page actually), it looks like Garanos has her sword held high. That means she would have had to completely change its position practically in mid-swing. In my opinion this would be a rather difficult feat that would simply give Gharsena plenty of warning as to what she was doing.
Hmmmm…. On second thought: If she stabbed down from Ochs like I was thinking and Gharsena stepped back out of range, such a upward sweeping attack would be a natural response. Now you really got me thinking here…

Looks like she hit her with magic missile.

And it just hit me: She didn’t cut any limbs off, because all are present and accounted for in the fourth panel.
Sorry about the spamming here.
not 100% on what happened here action-wise, though i agree it’s well presented, as an action scene…action scenes are tough to follow in general.

I call them plague-bombs, myself.

Thanks for the clarification everyone. And I’ll add my own “yuck!” to anything necrotizing. Nasty stuff. :P

ps. nice sound effects ^^

Does any one see the crowd behind Geilen? Is it the crew or (probably) the zombies?
not that i love seing garanos in pain or anything, but that last panel is *awesome* i would love to have it as a background!!
